Surrounded by the love of his family, John died peacefully, following a short illness, at North Bay Regional Health Centre on Friday, February 13, 2026. He was 83 years old.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ethel (Amell) (1949-2023). He was the much-loved step-father of Darwin Dunn (Tammy-Lynn) of South River and the proud grandfather of Riley (Megan Lott) and Erika Dunn.
John served as a 2nd Class Engineer with the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy). While his career was defined by the discipline of his military life, his soul was that of a true free spirit. He was famously the "wild card" to his late wife Ethel’s organized and structured nature. John and Ethel were a testament to the adage that opposites truly do attract, providing a perfect balance for one another for many years.
John loved the outdoors. Whether he was trout fishing in the heart of Algonquin Park, admiring local flora and fauna, or out for a long drive, he had a deep appreciation for the simple things in life.
Though John presented a tough exterior, those who knew him best understood that he had a kind heart. He was a devoted dog owner and loved to share stories around the dinner table when his family gathered together.
John will be missed by his extended family: His daughter Karen Tennant (Dale Rochon) and her children Matthew and Tyler Jolliffe of St. Catharines; and his brothers Terry Brown (Edith) of Port Colborne, Dave Brown (Marg) of St. Catharines, Paul Brown (Cathy) of Havelock and Brian Brown of Milton. John was predeceased by his parents Agnes (Dwyer) and John Brown of St. Catharines.
John’s family will celebrate his life privately.
Should you wish to make a donation in John’s memory, the Canadian Cancer Society is suggested.
