Jonas "John" Morkunas

John passed peacefully, with family by his side, at Nipissing Manor, Corbeil, on Thursday, February 27, 2025. He was 95 years old. John was predeceased by his wife Barb (nee Zufelt) (1938-2014). He was the beloved father of the late Elvin Morkunas (1960-2017), Nijole Toeppner (Tim) of North Bay, and Johnny Morkunas (Shandell) of North Bay. He will be forever remembered by his three grandchildren: Joshua, Genna (Leo), Valkyrie and six great-grandchildren: Elena, Leah, Weston, Linnea, Maija and Eeva. John was predeceased by his siblings Antanina Leparskas, Elena Bersenas, Zuzana Stravinskas, and Juozas "Joe" Morkunas.

John and his wife Barb were the retired former owners of the B&J Restaurant, Store and Motel in Trout Creek. John was a lifetime member of Lions International, initially in Trout Creek and upon retiring to their lakeside home in Golden Valley, the Argyle Lions Club. He and Barb enjoyed being members of the Powassan Curling Club for many years as well.

Cremation has taken place. The Morkunas family will receive visitors on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan. A celebration of life service will take place at 3:00. Interment of John’s ashes will take place in spring, at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Trout Creek.
