Margaret died peacefully at her home in Powassan, on Sunday, May 3, 2026. She was 90 years old.
Margaret (nee Mather) was the beloved wife of Robert “Bob” Butler of Powassan. She was the much-loved mother of Nancy MacAlpine (Colin) of Sydney, Australia, Pamela TarBush (the late Mark) of Listowel, John Butler (Pam) of London and Tom Butler (Tracy) of Powassan. She will be lovingly remembered by six grandchildren: Claire MacAlpine (Luke), Alex TarBush (Kerri), Reid TarBush (Larissa), James Butler, Harrison Butler and Ben Butler; and two great-grandchildren: Harrison “Mac” Teo and Madeline TarBush. Margaret was predeceased by her grandson Daniel Butler. She is survived by her sister Susanne Martin of White City, Saskatchewan and was predeceased by her siblings Bill Mather, Carol Hartill and Mary Lou Feltam.
Margaret was a quiet, gentle woman who walked softly on the earth. She was a spiritual seeker and avid reader, who spent many hours exploring the mysteries of her faith. A lifelong member of Powassan United Church and the Powassan United Church Women, Margaret was a familiar face at church functions.
While Margaret was known for her quiet nature, her gardens spoke volumes. A master gardener, she found true solace in the soil. Her vibrant flower beds were admired far and wide, becoming a local landmark and a frequent subject for area photographers. Through her gardens, Margaret shared her love for beauty and nature with everyone who passed by — a living testament to her patience and care.
Margaret was retired from a long career as receptionist at the dental practice of Dr. John Houghton in Powassan.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be announced at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, the family suggests donations to Powassan United Church or simply planting something beautiful in your own backyard in her honor.
