We are heartbroken to announce the sudden and unexpected passing after surgery on March 6, 2023 of our loved one, Ronald Lloyd Shortt, (Ron) of North Bay, Ontario, in his 82nd year. Loved and treasured by his wife, Gerri Butler. Beloved father to Niki Moore (Dave) and cherished “Papa” of Jessica Marchillo (Jay) and Wyatt Moore. Beloved Great Grampa to Alex and Riley. Endeared to and loved by his stepchildren Chris Preston (Meredith), Tim Preston (Gabriela) and Maggie Preston-Coles (James), and “Grampie” to their children, Jaisy Coles, Maddy Preston, Micaela Preston and Micky Coles. His two cats, Scamp and Danny-Boy, also miss him terribly.

Born in Cochrane in 1941, Ron is predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Leia Shortt, and will forever be missed by his brother Larry Shortt (Gloria) and sister Valerie McKean.  He will be lovingly remembered by his nephew, Joshua Shortt (Kim) and nieces Traci-Lynn McKean-Dobbs (Fred), Meghan Shortt (Jeff), Morgan Shortt (Kevin) as well as by many cousins, friends and neighbours.

Ron lived love, generosity, laughter and gentleness, reaching out with a helping hand to everyone he could: family, friends, and neighbours, He served the public as a member of the RCMP, the Sault Ste. Marie police force, and in positions of leadership in community organizations wherever he lived. He was respected and valued by many…devoted to the work of reconciliation with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, making valued friends among them.

Ron enjoyed playing his guitar and singing country music, reading, repairing cars and other “stuff”, fishing, boating, and teaching the skills and safety of boating as a member of the North Bay Power Squadron. He shared with Gerri a passion for the outdoors - for nature, animals and birds, especially the eagle and the wolf. His love for horses and his precious dog Saber years ago was beautiful to experience. He had serious concern for our planet. Until last December, Ron and Gerri were blessed to spend five very special years in a house by a river and a lake near Rutherglen.

Ron, we will always remember…your loving and helping, your generosity, your long, encompassing hugs, your laughter and repertoire of jokes for every situation. You had an outstanding smile that lightened a dark day. We remember you with a smile for all that you have been and always will be. We miss you…

On Friday, May 12th, 2023, from 2-4 p.m., people can visit with family and friends at Paul Funeral Home, Powassan. A service of remembering and saying good-bye will be held Saturday, also at Paul Funeral Home, on May 13th at 11 a.m. and will be live-streamed (see below).

Donations to honour Ron may be made to The Indigenous Friendship Centre of North Bay, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society. Watching the documentary, CANADA’S DARK SECRET, in which he plays a significant role, also honours Ron.
